Newcastle 4-1 Man United the premier league run in

Sandro Tonali put the Toon Army 1-0 up on 24 minutes with a well crafted strike before Alejandro Garnacho equalised for the Reds with under 10 minutes to go in the first half.

The second half was all about Newcastle, as Harvey Barnes grabbed a brace to make it 3-1 to the hosts.

Bruno Guimaraes made it four in the 77th minute after an Altay Bayindr mistake to make it a very bleak day in the North East for Manchester United.

This is also United's third defeat in a row against Newcastle at St James' Park.

Ruben Amorim spoke to the media after the game, here is what he had to say.

  • On the mistakes throughout the game

Poor defending and errors were a key part of why Manchester United lost in Newcastle on Sunday, especially with the goals in the second half.

"We did a lot of mistakes and they were better than us, stronger than us", explained Amorim.

"Suffering the second goal in the beginning of the second half hurt us a lot and then we did mistakes during the game that helped Newcastle to win the game.”

Andre Onana had been dropped for Bayindr but the Turkish goalkeeper made an error which helped the hosts get fourth goal.

“It’s a team thing," said Amorim.

"We are doing a lot of mistakes in certain games that give confidence to the opponent, give goals, and then it’s hard to cope with everything."

Man United didn't start off too badly in the game but once Newcastle got their first, it all changed.

"We had the first chance, we didn’t score, they have their chance, they score. Then they took control of the game."

"We scored to draw but then second half, we were suffering in the second play of the game, it’s hard for our team and we did a lot of mistakes.”

  • On Joshua Zirkzee's injury

  • The Manchester United forward is expected to be out for a while after he went down with a hamstring injury during the match.

Even though he isn't one of United's greatest ever forwards, he has started to improve in recent weeks so his efforts will be missed.

Zirkzee remained in the starting line up after scoring on Thursday night in Lyon.

Amorim said, "We had to make rotation because we are trying to recover in two days from each game but trying to win this game also.

"Josh, I think he will be out for some games. So, let’s focus on the next one.”

    • On Thursday's big game vs Lyon

In the game before Newcastle, Manchester United travelled to France to face Lyon in their first leg match of the Europa League quarter finals  The score was 2-2 with United being pegged back by a late equaliser from the hosts.

It's no joke that Thursday's second leg is a huge game for the Reds and if they are to lose, it will be season over and very likely no European football unless a miracle happens in the league!

“We have to start tomorrow", said the United boss when asked about Thursday.

"We cannot change this game, this performance. We just need to think of the future, we have one competition that we can win a trophy and go to the Champions League next season.”

Another big question is who will start in goal? Onana was dropped for the game at St James' Park after mistakes made in Lyon in the first leg but Bayindr made mistakes in this one so Amorim has a big decision.

Amorim said, “We are going to prepare to choose the best eleven that we think can win. I left Onana at home today because any situation of the game, the cameras would be on him and he was not playing, he on the bench but feeling the pressure, feeling the moment".

  • As  Newcastle fans, are very happy. And  learnt one thing, teams build up from the very low. It takes determination, courage, discipline, perseverance and teamwork to make it... Its not about a single player or two, but the whole team. Now its the time for you to rebuild Instead of focusing on keeping the club going and waiting for the next transfer window to make good recruitments in defense and the best on the pitch, you spend your time muzzling a modern goalkeeper.

  • All hail Bruno...he provided two assists and scored. You treat a loss as poor showings from the team but attribute a win to Bruno's assists and goals. No wonder United is where they are, glorifying players even in our current position. United think like Arsenal and that is a sign of a weak mentality Thanks to the team for training the fans with great endurance. The current players are mostly not worthy of wearing this shirt. The goal of staying in the league has been achieved. Congratulations. The club needs to be ruthless and replace Onana in the summer. He single handedly cost Ten Hag's job and will do the same with Amorim if he's still the first choice keeper. This guy also destroyed our European dream last season in the UCL and he's doing it again in the Europa League now.

  • Poor performance of all player...lazy football...only back passe...when newcastle have ball...all players panic.... please...play football to score some goal...no only passe back...long ball...i like to see all player play to win againt lyon...no put 1 goal and sleep football After Zirkzee left the field things got worst. Hojlund? Really? Zero shots on goal. How many touches? Please. Why not use your new signings? At least they would be better than Hojlund. What are nonsense Hojlund is? Sometimes I wonder why Ten Hag bought him. Please leave him out of the team. Completely

  • Overall 10 wins against 14 lost matches. Its very clear Man United has squad problem. So to reverse this they need to find their lost glory of about 15 years and find players with similar winning attributes to replace the current squad. Here you will need the services of Christiano ronaldo to help the club shop for prolific players worldwide. And given that the club is broke he can loan the club some money. For sure Manchester crucial matches are coming and will not be able to beat top 10 teams in the league, unless radical surgery and extraordinary thinking is considered.

  • And Why can't you strike to the second poll side zirkzee doesn't play like a professional  am not a man u fan but I love good football ... He should have shoot to the second side of the poll .. obviously the goal keeper was in first poll trying to get to the second , do you know how fast a ball could beat a goal keeper with a strong accuracy lionel messi Christino Ronaldo both we the greatest of all time. Yeah almost scored but he didn't like he always does...he is not a striker he is a second striker or a attacking midfielder...MU need a proper striker who knows the measurements of those bars and corners...I wish MU would send Hojlund on loan to a good league and buy a quality striker asap.Dalot should have been at the end of that ball and that would have been a goal cuz Zirkzee would have passed to him or his run would have created a space for Zirkzee to go through the middle and it's really Fantastic , obviously United aren’t scoring goals atm or winning points as they languish 14th in the league . So it’s definitely nice for the fans to see them string 3 passes together . Have you guys seen the 2024/25 seasons top 10 throw ins definitely a stocking filler for die hard fans and worth a watch at only £19.99.
